Preparedness starts with Awareness

As devastating floods sweep through parts of the US this summer, we’re reminded that disaster doesn’t knock politely—it can arrive with little warning and major consequences. For Parkinson’s patients and caregivers, it’s essential to recognize that our region is also vulnerable to emergencies like severe thunderstorms, blizzards, power outages, and heatwaves.

In this issue, we’re spotlighting summertime emergency preparedness. Emergency situations can intensify PD symptoms, disrupt medication schedules, and create mobility challenges.

Emergency Preparedness Tips:

  1. Keep a printed copy of medications (medication name, dosage, and schedule) and medical providers’ contact info - Parkinson’s Foundation has this template you can use.
  2. If you need to relocate, pack assistive devices like walkers, canes, or wheelchairs—even if used only occasionally. (see our packing list below).
  3. Stay hydrated and avoid overheating, especially if you experience orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing).
  4. Build an Emergency Kit - see the Dept of Homeland Security's recommendations here.
  5. Stay Informed. FEMA has an app that will send alerts to your phone.

While preparing for an emergency might feel like a burden upfront, it’s a cost-effective investment for your health, wallet, and peace of mind.

Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your summer!
